Summer Medical and Dental Education Program at Yale School of Medicine
During the summer after my freshman year, I participated in the Yale School of Medicine Summer Medical and Dental Education Program. There, we did coursework in the basic sciences and shadowed physicians. While observing in the emergency room (ER), I experienced death up close for the first time. A patient came in with cardiac arrest. Although, the ER team spent several minutes trying to resuscitate the patient, they ultimately failed. That afternoon, I was quiet as I realized that, even with all the medical wonders available to us, we are unable to save everyone. It later dawned on me that many more people would suffer the patient's fate if it were not for a dedicated group of healthcare professionals. While this experience helped to reaffirm my reason for going into medicine, it also taught me an important life lesson. I saw that, while we must recognize our failures at face value for what they are, we should not let them define who we are and what we do.
Also, at Yale, I gained the beneficial mentorships of Dr. Joseph Wolenski and Dr. Iona Black. They continually drove me to put forth my best, and their passion for teaching science helped influence me to give back to my university as a chemistry tutor.
In addition, fellow students and I took time during the weekends to explore nearby cities like New York and Boston.
